I imagined John Blanke as a lone black person in the white context of the Royal Court, with all that implies. I feel he was a proud and confident man, an accomplished trumpeter, who felt sufficiently secure in his musical expertise and thus his position at the court of Henry VIII, to request a pay rise. This could be the first recorded demand for equal pay!
