It’s Europe 1533 - King Henry VIII is desperate for a male heir. He is under pressure from his young, lively vivacious mistress Anne Boleyn to marry her, while his Queen and wife the dull, pious Katherine looks ragged, repeated pregnancies have aged her.
Henry wants the Pope to annul that marriage claiming it is against God’s law for him to marry his brother’s wife leaving him free to marry his mistress Anne. The Pope - Clement VII – is under great pressure from Katherine’s nephew - The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V - is inclined NOT to allow that annulment.
One person - Catalina of Motril: a black woman - Katherine’s lady of the bedchamber holds a secret that can break this marital deadlock between State and Church. Catalina is on the run, hunted across Europe by agents from both sides in the argument – from the King and from the Emperor. She seeks the help of another black person at Henry’s court the trumpeter John Blanke.
