I imagined John Blanke as a confident and assertive character, a free agent, and a man of standing. Ultimately, however, he remains for me an unknowable individual. We can register his movements in the courts of Henry VIII as one narrative thread amongst others, a hairline trace that signals towards further, more hidden, histories of black people in Britain in this period.
