I imagined John Blanke as a strong, charismatic, creative, black man making his mark on the world - whilst carrying his culture and heritage on his shoulders with pride.

I feel my son Dean has these same qualities so I used his image in a scraperboard etching to represent John Blanke, with Adinkra symbols adorning his shoulders.  

I chose to use Adinkra symbols as their purpose is to visually communicate concepts or original thoughts.

Whilst making the etching and scratching into the board I felt the connection between John Blanke's pride and heritage and that of my sons.
