I imagined John Blanke as a man with great discipline, commitment and absolute professionalism, he had to have these qualities in order to be chosen to play for the King. He was an elite cavalry trumpeter, the training is extensive and arduous, the hours are long. It was incredibly humbling to be asked to be the modern day trumpeter in memory of John Blanke (JB). As a black trumpeter in the British Army, I appreciate how big an achievement it was for JB to be accepted and given the opportunity to serve in the royal courts. Even today, it is challenging to become a musician in the Household Cavalry.
Project Director’s Note
Lawrence’s trumpeting announced the opening and closing of John Blanke Live! Symposia at The College of Arms and the National Trust’s Sutton House. Both times his playing attracted many compliments and greatly added to the evenings' success. |
