I imagined John Blanke or his family commissioning a yard of cloth for his travels - either before he left West Africa or in celebration on returning home. ( I know we are not sure about that part). The cloth acts as an emotional trigger, a cultural reference, a messenger of life and and a substitute for  cultural memory.
