I imagined John Blanke as a thoughtful and insightful musician who observed new cultures and learned languages as he played in Royal Courts across Europe. He sounded the trumpet not only to herald the King but also as a proclamation of his own liberty. With the timeless language of music he transcended barriers of race and status. He was heard and understood.
