I imagine John Blanke as a vivacious personality who loves to be the centre of attention, a showman - flamboyant and brilliant. He has a raucous sense of humour, a twinkle in his eye and a witty response ready on his lips. He wears excellent clothing at all times, and has an eye for quality and fine fabrics. This is partly why I wanted to create an embroidered portrait, using satin, silk thread, glass beads and lace - materials reserved for the Royal Court and noble families in John’s day, so this feels appropriate. Only the best for John Blanke.
