I imagined John Blanke as an individual in possession of exceptional talents. Although ‘talent’ is a problematic notion in the same way that ‘gifted’ or ‘genius’ is often seen to be. I can’t conceive of any circumstance where an individual like John Blanke could have survived and prospered, with odds, so heavily stacked against his likely success, if he were not an exceptional individual. Talent is, in this context the word that for me encompasses the breadth of skills that he would have needed to acquire and always quickly, while all the time negotiating unfamiliar challenges.
